Hello! My name is Margarida Mugeiro and I’m the Vice-President of CFC. My duty is to gather material for and help edit the club newsletter. My passion for films has led me here!

My go-to movie genre is anime. Anime is just perfect for people who are fascinated with animation and, of course, amazing and unique storylines. The visuals leave an impact hard enough to make you want to re-watch it. Plots and storylines are amazing beyond words. They widen your brain’s imaginative domain. I think anime is a form of entertainment with the perfect graphics. Animation allows creators to tell more fantastic stories visually. One of the most exciting things about the anime industry is the depth of characterization. Moreover, the character development that a character goes through as the series progress is remarkable. You will come to know the backstories, the hardships that made the character the way it used to be. The background music lights up the moment, intense the moment, or makes everything depressing, all according to the plot, making the anime more enjoyable. The fight scenes are on another level. Such intense fight scenes that would put the other action movies to shame!

Hope to see you soon at one of our screenings!

Margarida (Vice-President)

Hi, I’m Huixuan Wu from China and I am the treasure of CFS. I have always been a movie lover since I was in junior high school and I especially have a bias for classic movies, that’s why I am in the Classic Film Society! In this society, I have got a lot of fun as we are so international and I got the chance to appreciate great classic movies from all over the world. Today I also would like to share with you guys my favorite classic movie from China, maybe you’ve heard about it, maybe not, hope you can enjoy it.

My favorite one is called 霸王别姬, Farewell My Concubine in English. It is two films at once: An epic spanning a half century of modern Chinese history, and a melodrama about life backstage at the famed Peking Opera. It detailed panorama of Chinese history through the lives of two men playing Peking Opera.

Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xialou, beautifully portrayed from youth to age, are the central characters, they spent childhood apprenticeship and eventual stardom, and the unrequited love Dieyi has for Xialou — mirrored, with painful foreboding of the consequences to come, by their nightly performance in a traditional opera, with Xialou as the King and Dieyi as his self-sacrificing Concubine.

This film uses the relationships both to explore themes —homosexuality — and to reflect and reveal the greater turmoil taking place in Chinese politics and history. As a difficult and politically dangerous film, it is absolutely classic and significant.

Hi! My name is Sheilagh and my main job is to recruit new members and the organization of all of our events that we hold throughout the year. Last year we managed to recruit over 100 classic film lovers, and our main event for the year was the Themed Ball we threw, which was open to members, and non-members alike!

My favorite genre of films has always been musicals, the cheesier the better! Grease has and will always hold a special place in my heart!

Heya! I’m Jelena, and I’m the Public Relations Officer here in ClassFilmClub! I’m here to act as an intermediary between the club and the outside, and I’m also the person who posts all those silly emojis on our group’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.

My favorite films are horror, the shocker the better! But I also have a soft spot for all things sci-fi, and I’m always in the mood to chat all about genre films and their merit on the history of cinema.

Jelena (Public Relations Officer)
