Classic Movies Set in Ireland

1. My Left Foot (1989)

My Left Foot, which is the story of Christy Brown, an Irish man born with cerebral palsy, who could only control his left foot. My Left Foot was critically acclaimed on its release, especially regarding the performance of Daniel Day Lewis & Brenda Fricker, who both won Academy Awards for their work.

Best Quote: “All is nothing, therefore nothing must end.”


2. The Butcher Boy (1997)

The Butcher Boy is probably the creepiest movie on our list, and is based on a novel of the same name by Patrick McCabe. This film follows Francie Brady, a 12-year-old boy who retreats into a fantasy world to escape the reality of his dysfunctional family; as his circumstances worsen, his sanity deteriorates and he begins acting out, with increasing brutality. The Butcher Boy won many awards across Europe, and was critically well-received.

The Best Quote: “From now on I was going to be good. And if anyone was looking for Francie the Bad Bastard, they wouldn't find him. Because he was busy getting the Francie-Not-a-Bad-Bastard-Anymore diploma.”


3. The Quiet Man (1952)

John Wayne, & Maureen O’Hara are the two iconic stars of this 1952 classic film, which won two Academy Awards - Best Director, and Best Cinematography. This movie set in the 1920’s, follows Sean Thornton (Wayne) on his journey from America to his birthplace in Ireland, in order to purchase his family’s former farm, where he falls in love with Mary-Kate Danahar (O’Hara). The Quiet Man is one of the most iconic films set in Ireland, and displays the fantastic scenery of Galway & Mayo, and is a must-watch on our list!

Best Quote: ‘He'll regret it till his dying day if ever he lives that long.’


4. The Commitments (1991)

Based on the novel by Roddy Doyle, The Commitments tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, who assembles a group of young men & women to form a soul band named The Commitments. The movie follows the drama within the group, and is a fantastic feel-good comedy, which won Best Film, Best Sound, and many more awards at the 1992 British Academy Film Awards.

Best Quote: ‘Is this the band then? Betcha U2 are sh***in’ themselves.’


5. The Field (1990)

"Bull" McCabe (Richard Harris) has spent three decades tending a rented field by the sea in Ireland. When the wealthy widow who owns the plot decides to sell it, she holds an open auction to spite McCabe. A rich American (Tom Berenger) with visions of a factory on the site outbids him, and McCabe then schemes with his emotionally crippled son, Tadgh (Sean Bean), to hold on to the land - his only consolation in a life of loss, toil and a marriage gone sour.

Best Quote: ‘Be a good yank, turn around and go home.’
